Eggs

We have brown and white egg laying hens.  The brown layers a called White Brahmas.  The white layers are called White Leghorns. We have had other breeds in the past but I really like these two.

Why?

The Brahmas are just plain cute. They handle the cold well and lay in the winter.  They are docile chickens.  The Leghorns lay jumbo eggs.  If you didn't know better you'd think they produced small eggs because they are so slim. Don't let them fool you. They are lean laying machines.

Comparison photo:  In my hand is a white egg from one of the Leghorns.  On the right is a brown egg from a Brahma hen.  For feed to egg production ratios nothing bets the Leghorns. In colder temps the Leghorns need more protection than the Brahmas. This, of course, is my unqualified, unscientific Momma opinion. 

Look at the size of that egg! Almost as big as a duck's egg.

Last winter was  they outdid themselves with their egg production.  We could not eat them fast enough.

Using  Kellene Bishop of Preparedness Pro method of preserving eggs we had eggs for months...and months...and months.  Did I mention we had a lot of eggs?

ChickChick and her friends have not been as prolific this winter.  We'll probably get a new batch of chicks in the spring. We usually purchase our chicks from the local farm store or from  Murray McMurray Hatchery .McMurray's delivers them via the USPS and you have to pick them up at the post office.  You can hear them chirping as soon as you walk in.
